. 2008 election poll
Swedish Blog World Class Swedish Cuisine3. Aug. 2008. Last week when I read about the Swedish agriculture minister Eskil Erlandsson s statement that he hopes to establish Sweden as haute cuisine leader of the world, I naturally assumed it was a joke. Or maybe that the venerable government official had one too many shots of Absolut. Because c on now, weden and (orld-class cuisine in the same sentence I trying not to laugh too hard as I chewing on a bit of falukrov while eating in front of the computer. primary elections 2008
Sweden may be famous for many things. Elks (yes, you can call them oose if you want), buxom blondes, gender equality, state-provided welfare, pop music, Saabs, Volvos (even though both are now technically American), Ikea and so on. But food Nah, never heard of it. Unless we e talking here about the Swedish Chef. Bork, bork, bork! 2008 election issues
Actually, no, Sweden has a few celebrity chefs, but as soon as they attain a certain level of fame they run to New York, or other places where people appreciate truly good food. Marcus Samuelsson and his quavit restaurant immediately come to mind. I was just reading on the quavit site, and I don know about you, but when a restaurant s website in the very first sentence chooses to praise its interior d cor and furniture, something seems amiss to me. I was going to peruse the menu as well, but when a famous restaurant still uses pdfs for its menus, which additionally open in a new pop-up window, I kind of lose interest. Maybe they are so focused on their celebrated interior d cor, sorry, I meant food, they didn get the memo that most people these days use pop-up blockers. 2008 senate elections
But let get back to our misguided minister of agriculture. He reportedly likes simple home cooking, like meatballs, potatoes and pancakes accompanied by a glass of cold milk. Hey, sounds like a perfect example of world-class haute cuisine to me. the 2008 presidential election
Really When thinking about countries famous for their gastronomic achievements, places like France and Italy and Japan come to mind. Sweden Nah! When thinking about Swedish gastronomic achievements, meatballs, pickled herring, fish eggs (called here strong kaviar but trust me, it as close to real caviar as I am to Miss Universe) in a tube, falukorv, gravadlax and pytt i panna come to mind. 2008 election date
From left to right: oxpytt (potatoes in pieces with bits of meat and onion, a variety on pytt i panna), gravadlax (raw salmon cured in salt, sugar and dill), sill (pickled herring in a jar), falukorv (not exactly sure what it is, but it purports to be a big fat pink sausage), Kalles kaviar in a tube, and typical northern flatbread.. 2008 us presidential election
And oh yeah, don forget surstr mming! Surstr mming can be considered many things. It can be an explosive, or a biological weapon, or an instrument of torture (or pleasure for those with an S M bend), but to think of it as food is a bit of a stretch. Because the season for surstr mming is approaching, I will prepare a separate post about it soon I even found a willing victim, err, I mean a taster, to demonstrate this delicacy for you. presidential election of 2008
Here I supposed would be a good time to declare that I do like most Swedish food. After all, I bought all of the stuff in the photo above. High-class cuisine it definitely not, but it simple, easy to make, convenient and very utilitarian. candidates for 2008
And if there one Swedish dish that I a huge fan of, it would be souvas. Technically, strong souvas is a Sami word meaning strong r kt (smoked) in Swedish. And that exactly what it is thinly sliced smoked reindeer meat, which can be later stir fried and eaten fajita-style wrapped in a typically northern sheet of flatbread. So you could say, it an Arctic kebab, or a polar fajita. Oh yeah, now I guess I need to tell you about the Sami. OK, I will. Wait for the next post. the 2008 election
Making souvas at the Gammlia Christmas market last year.. Here how I make my souvas: A couple of slices of reindeer meat, cut up in strips A handful of shredded cabbage (yes, I know it not traditional, but you need to get your nutrition from somewhere) A handful of slices mushrooms Some shredded carrot if you like A bit of sliced onion. Stir fry everything with a bit of oil, add salt and pepper to taste. Or be unorthodox and use soy sauce. us election 2008
Add some parsley if you like the taste. Slice a couple of tomatoes. Prepare some sour cream or yogurt dressing. Get a pita bread, or even a tortilla, if you don have Nordic flatbread handy and stuff if all up, roll it up and enjoy! By Anna | Posted in Culture | Comments (0) senate election 2008
Useful Words: Jobbig29. Jul. candidates for the 2008
In every language there are words that you either just love or simply hate for whatever reason. Personally, I not a fan of words that are difficult to spell, and unfortunately the English language is full of them. Like ssassinate The only reason I remember how to spell it is because it has two of ,ou know what in it. 2008 election predictions
I much prefer words that are useful and good at describing whatever it is that they mean. And the Swedish language is full of them! Like strong jobbig for example. See One look at it and I don think I need to explain what it means. It means exactly what it looks like what it sounds like. My Swedish-English dictionary does not bother to provide a translation for strong jobbig Instead, it gives an example: 2008 election dates
it hard work 2008 presedential election
But c on now! strong Jobbig is so much more than that. It describes a situation, or a task perfectly. In case you haven noticed, strong jobbig is an adjective, so its job is to describe. And describe it does. When you hear that something is strong jobbig you know it a tiring, boring, mundane, difficult task. A task you sell your left foot to avoid. It just makes you sigh with desperation. And in fact, strong jobbig does sound like a sigh. 2008 general election
So what can be strong jobbig It depends on a person and that person individual dislikes. For me it cleaning the bathroom floor drain. Jobbig! Pretty much anything that has to do with cleaning is strong jobbig for me. Preparing tax returns is definitely strong jobbig 2008 presidental elections
It easy to see that the word comes from ob which in Swedish is spelled with two hence - strong jobb And even though it spelled with a you may hear (in fact I sure you will certainly hear) Swedish people pronounce it as em yob It because in Swedish sounds like , It the same with enny aka em Yenny and on aka em Yon And of course, with strong jobbig or rather yobbig , as it sounds in Swedish. 2008 election calendar
As you e seen above in the example from my dictionary, strong jobbig acquired a strong t ending and became strong jobbigt And why is that It behaved like most Swedish adjectives do. They get a strong t ending when paired with strong ett nouns. And strong det is an strong ett noun of sorts. When an adjective describes a noun in plural, it gets an strong a ending. cnn election 2008
So this is how it would look in a Swedish-Swedish dictionary: united states presidential
what makes a person tired or irritated; laborious, tiresome us elections 2008
And all those explanations are fine, but none get even close to the impact of strong jobbig So next time when you e faced with a particularly mundane task that makes you tired even thinking about it, you know what to say. Det r jobbigt! By Anna | Posted in Grammar, Vocabulary | Comments (8) 2008 election canidates
Plural Ett Words26. I have a foreign neighbor who reads this blog (hi neighbor!), and I think it very convenient that she does. She right under my nose, she learning Swedish, speaks passable English and is not afraid to ask questions. So I wasn surprised when she spied me out while I was taking my cats out for a walk (yes, you can put your cat in a special harness with a leash and take it for a stroll outside, it quite common in Sweden) and came over to ask questions. And since she allergic to cats, I knew this had to be serious. 2008 congressional elections
Our conversation went more or less like this: Neighbor: ou wrote that strong blb r is an strong ett word, so then where does strong blb ren come from Huh /em And she looked at me expectantly. Anna: hmm It like with strong barnet and strong barnen one is definite singular and the other definite plural. /em Neighbor: lucidate, please. /em . candidates for 2008 elections
I started to explain that some plural forms, indefinite plural forms that is, look exactly like singular indefinite forms, and that those plural forms can also be made definite by attaching different endings, but she abruptly interrupted me by saying: 2008 election candidate
n your blog. /em And disappeared. So here it is. We l be talking about grammar today, and all complaints about the topic can be directed to my neighbor. I think I should begin by explaining how you can turn a singular noun into a plural noun, but that is such a mind-numbingly boring topic that you be snoring five words into it. So instead, why don we limit ourselves to strong ettwords only For now, of course. canidates for 2008 election
strong Ett words in their plural forms can look somewhat confusing to people who are learning Swedish, but in reality the rules are very simple. 1. strong Ett words that end in a vowel in their singular form, take the ending strong n in the plural (indefinite), like this: 2008 presidential primary
(an apple) + pplen (apples) election for 2008
(an account) + konton (accounts) 2008 primary election dates
(a postage stamp) + frim rken (stamps) 2008 election news
So you see all these supposedly strong ett words and think: mmm they end with an strong n now, they must be plural. /em And you e right. 2. strong Ett words that end in a consonant don take any ending in the plural (indefinite) at all. us presidential elections 2008
(a child) + barn (children) elections for 2008
(a year) + r (years) 2008 presidentail election
Or like the poor blueberry from the last post: elections in 2008
So that how you make the plural of strong ett words. We l talk about strong en words some other time. Where things can get funky is when you attempt to make definite forms of those strong ett plural nouns. And you do it by attaching an appropriate ending at the end. elections of 2008
1. For the strong ett words in the first category above, you do it by tacking an strong a at the end, like this: november 2008 election
(apples) + pplena (the apples) 2008 election prediction
(accounts) + kontona (the accounts) 2008 election schedule
(stamps) + frim rkena (the stamps) senators up for re election in
2. And for the strong ett words in the second category, to make the definite plural form you attach an strong en at the end. (Yes, I know it kind of dumb, but I didn come up with this rule, trust me, if I had a chance, I make it MUCH simpler and less confusing): republican candidates for 2008
And our favorite fruit: 2008 election wiki
So now when you l see an strong ett word with an strong en ending, you will know it means something in plural in its definite form. Now, somebody asked for a Swedish grammar book in English, and I polled my resident foreigners, and l : svenska som fr mmande sprk. A concise Swedish grammar = Svensk grammatik p engelska /strong was voted as the best choice. It published by Natur och Kultur and it been translated into every possible language, from Somali to Russian. the election of 2008
The English language version has a red cover (other languages have different colors) and it been recently re-issued. When purchasing it in Sweden expect to pay anywhere from 219 to 280 SEK. And of course I can find even one cover shot on the internet (other than this microscopic one) to show you what it looks like. I did find it at my local bookstore, but they wouldn let me take a picture. Apparently, when compared to other grammar books, this one is superior due to its simple language and straightforward explanations. I found two ISBNs for it: polls for 2008 election

Blueberry Forecast 200823. Come July and August Swedes change, and quite visibly even. One look at their hands and fingers and you begin to seriously ponder whether or not you are among madmen. Why Their fingers are red and purple. Sometimes, their mouths are too. when is the 2008 presidential
Yes, it blueberry season! Actually, no. Wait! Technically, it ilberry in English, Vaccinium myrtillus in Latin, and simply strong blb r in Swedish.
